We Avoid Fragrance

At Soapnut Republic we list every specific ingredient on our labels, and we only use pure essential oils and other natural ingredients to fragrance our products. Our oils smell amazing, and they deliver antibacterial, anti-fungal and antimicrobial benefits that other brands only achieve with toxic chemicals.

Many other companies simply use the word “fragrance” to describe the concoction of toxic chemicals they use to make their products smell better. A single scent may contain anywhere from 50 to 300 distinct chemicals that are not listed on their labels.

Artificial fragrances are cheaper to use than essential oils, but the side-effects can be costly for consumers’ health.

A landmark report released by US-based Breast Cancer Prevention Partners (BCPP) in 2018, exposed the presence of harmful fragrance chemicals linked to cancer, hormone disruption, reproductive harm, and respiratory toxicity that did not appear on the product labels. BCPP found that one quarter of the 338 fragrance ingredients they found in both personal care and cleaning products were linked to adverse, chronic health effects.

They also revealed that products marketed as “fragrance free” or “unscented” may contain masking fragrances. These are additional ingredients added to hide the odour of a formula, which are not always listed on product labels.
